Congenital heart defects were treated via interventional cardiology procedures at Chamran Hospital, in Isfahan Province, for the first time.
A 12-year-old with aortopulmonary window (APW) and a two-month-old with Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) received interventional (intravascular) treatment at the specialized medical center, IRNA reported.
Both conditions are rare heart defects. In patients with APW, there is a hole connecting the major artery taking blood from the heart to the body (the aorta) and the one taking blood from the heart to the lungs (pulmonary artery). ToF affects the structure of the heart and causes oxygen-poor blood to flow out of the heart and into the rest of the body. Infants and children suffering from the defect usually have blue-tinged skin because their blood doesn’t carry enough oxygen. Interventional procedures are up-and-coming methods in cardiology and comprise procedures used for diagnosis or for treatment that involves making a cut or a hole to gain access to the inside of a patient’s coronary blood vessels.
